In this book, we strive to bridge the gap between the optimal approaches to mathematical signal processing for magnetic resonance spectroscopy and their clinical relevance. This is especially vital for clinical oncology diagnostics, for which accurate quantification is urgently needed in order to achieve timely cancer detection. Clearly, we are aiming at a broad multi-disciplinary audience. Thus, we provide a mathematically rigorous presentation of the principles of signal processing, emphasizing cutting edge theory-based innovations that can optimize magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This was made possible by widening the horizons of signal processing through finding its natural framework in a larger and well-established theory – quantum physics. We also provide an in-depth examination of the application of optimized signal processing through the fast Padé transform to several specific problem areas in oncologic diagnostics such as ovarian cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Readers with an expertize is signal processing, mathematical physics and/or quantum mechanics will likely want to read this book in the order in which it appears, beginning with the theory and analysis, together with the proof-of- principle results for magnetic resonance studies applying the fast Padé transform, and finally its application and potential in urgently needed clinical areas. Perhaps for some such readers this trajectory will be a spur to involvement in further research in this area, as well as being a realization of the remark- able practicality of these theoretical advances. Medical physicists may choose to begin with the proof-of-principle results. They could then progressively branch out in both directions: towards the theory as well as the clinical applications.
Those whose primary expertize is quite distant from the realm of mathematics such as biomedical researchers and clinical practitioners will most likely wish to start with the clinical chapters as motivation. Then, they may proceed to the proof-of-principle results, and finally, the theoretical portions which hopefully can challenge some preconceived assumptions, and thereby offer intellectual gratification. We recommend that this latter readership pay particular attention to section 1.4 in which we address the question: Why is this topic relevant for biomedical researchers and clinical practitioners? In striving to answer this question, it is our hope that this book will be part of the overall efforts via translational research to help biomedical researchers and clinicians more actively and confidently engage in more fundamental areas such as optimization of molecular imaging through magnetic resonance, as a vital part of the battle against the scourge of cancer.
