The Molecular Pathology of Autoimmune Diseases is a concise and centralized resource for information on the topic, with a special focus on the molecular and genetic basis of these disorders. Dozens of international experts devote themselves to illuminating the reader in this volume, with discussions on the basic aspects of autoimmune processes to systemic and organ-specific diseases. This volume is an invaluable reference to students and professionals in immunology and related fields.

Since the first edition of this book, research on the pathogenesis of autoimmunity has
continued unabated, with striking progress. Every year there are numerous conferences
devoted to the topic, and almost every issue of the major immunologic journals contains
several articles that attempt to provide another piece to this continuing puzzle. As a
consequence, significant advances have been made in both basic and clinical aspects,
particularly in elucidating the molecular and genetic basis of autoimmune diseases. The
purpose of this book remains the consolidation of this information into a concise and
centralized resource.
The second edition includes several thoroughly re-written or updated chapters, as well
as many new chapters. The overall organization has been maintained, with basic aspects
preceding the chapters on clinical entities, the latter addressed separately from the human
and, whenever possible, the corresponding animal model perspective. In this way, the
reader can juxtapose the available information and reciprocally address unanswered
questions.
The success of a book such as this is almost exclusively dependent on the caliber of its
contributors, and we are very fortunate to have world-recognized experts who set aside
other matters and enthusiastically took up this demanding task. We would like to thank
all of the authors for their truly outstanding contributions in creating a repository of
timely and deeply relevant data.
We hope that this text will provide a foundation from which a new generation of
scientists will build upon the accomplishments of the clinical and basic scientists before
them who have devoted themselves to unraveling the mysteries of autoimmune diseases.
