1. Cezmi A. Akdis – Global Atlas of Allergic Rhinitis and Chronic Rhinosinusitis
The World Health Organization declares chronic respiratory diseases as one of the 4 major health
problems of mankind. Allergic rhinitis (AR) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) affect more than 30% of
the population worldwide. The socio-economic impact of chronic upper airway diseases is estimated
in Europe with more than 150 billion Euro per year. Unmet needs in the field of AR and CRS can
be identified in several domains: education, research, development and clinical care. In addition,
the huge socioeconomic burden of AR and CRS to health care systems is expected to substantially
increase in the future, warranting new policies in healthcare at the global and national level.
To tackle the huge global health problem of chronic upper airways inflammation, the EAACI decided
to develop the “Global Atlas of Allergic Rhinitis and Chronic Rhinosinusitis” as a follow up
of the “Global Atlas of Allergy” and “Global Atlas of Asthma” which were launched in 2013 and
2014, had a huge success worldwide, and are currently translated into several languages. With
this Atlas, EAACI and the authors of the Atlas aim to increase awareness on the global epidemic
and the burden of chronic inflammatory upper airways diseases and to bring to the global attention
the need to be recognized as a main concern in national health strategies; to reinforce the role of
early diagnosis and treatment, education and prevention in a structured management strategy; to
reveal their priority for research; to provide guidance on how to overcome barriers; to expand the
existing programs and tools and explore innovative solutions for a comprehensive global management
approach.
The EAACI Global Atlas of Allergic Rhinitis and Chronic Rhinosinusitis contains 154 chapters written
by 218 authors with 269 illustrations and 92 tables. It is developed as a desktop reference for
multisectoral usage covering all aspects of AR and CRS from epidemiology, risk factors and molecular
and cellular mechanisms to their management, clinical features and co-morbidities, diagnosis,
treatment, prevention and control. In addition, the Atlas will offer an educational tool and a desktop
reference for medical students, allied health workers, primary care physicians, pharmacists,
medical industry, policy makers, patient organizations and specialists dealing with AR and CRS. We
would like to thank all of the authors for their contributions.

2. Cezmi A. Akdis – Global Atlas of Allergy
Allergic diseases are affecting the lives of more than one billion people worldwide. With an epidemic
rise during the last 60 years, their prevalence is expected to reach up to 4 billion in 2050s. Because of
immense numbers of affected individuals, the general public confronts huge direct and indirect costs
with major effects on macroeconomics due to health-care, loss of productivity and absenteeism of
patients. Unfortunately, high number of unmet needs due to missing scientific knowledge in disease
mechanisms, prevention, patient care, and social determinants remain to be resolved.
To tackle this huge global health problem, we as the EAACI decided to develop the “Global Atlas of Allergy”
as a follow up of our “Global Atlas of Asthma” which was launched last year. With this Atlas, we
aimed to gather evidence to call attention to the burden of allergic diseases; to warrant their recognition
as a main concern in national health strategies; to reveal their priority for research; to describe
environmental factors; to evaluate the best ways to prevent and control allergies; to provide guidance
on how to overcome barriers; to alert the political bodies to ensure global management approaches.
The EAACI Global Atlas of Allergy contains 139 chapters written by 183 authors with 274 illustrations
and 100 tables. It is developed as a desktop reference for multisectoral usage covering all aspects
of allergic diseases from allergens, epidemiology, risk factors and molecular and cellular mechanisms
to their management, major current problems in allergies and associated diseases, prevention
and control of allergic diseases. In addition, the Atlas will offer an educational tool and a desktop
reference for medical students, allied health workers, primary care physicians, medical industry, policy
makers, patient organizations and specialists dealing with allergies and co-morbid diseases. We
would like to thank all of the authors for their contributions

3. Cezmi A. Akdis – Global Atlas of Asthma
Asthma is a major public health problem affecting the lives of several hundred million people around the
world, with an increasing prevalence in developing countries. Governments, and the general public, face huge
direct and indirect costs, with major effects on macroeconomics due to health-care costs, loss of productivity
and the absenteeism of patients. Unfortunately, a high number of unmet needs remain to be resolved, due to
gaps in current scientific knowledge in pathophysiology and in patient care, and as a result of the global social
determinants of health.
To tackle this huge global health problem, we at the EAACI decided to develop a “Global Atlas of Asthma”. With this
Atlas, our aims were: to gather evidence to call attention to the burden of asthma, to warrant its recognition as
a main concern in national health strategies; to demonstrate its priority as an issue for research; to describe risk
factors for asthma; to evaluate the best ways to prevent and control it; to provide guidance on how to overcome
barriers; and to alert political bodies to the issue of asthma to ensure a global management approach.
The “Global Atlas of Asthma” has been developed as an essential reference source for multi-sectoral use, covering
all aspects of asthma, from epidemiology, risk factors and mechanisms to phenotypes and management, to major
current problems in asthma, associated diseases, and asthma prevention and control. With 59 chapters written
by 80 contributing authors, and containing 147 illustrations and 46 tables, the Atlas will also be a comprehensive
educational tool and desktop reference for medical students, allied health workers, primary care physicians,
medical industry, policy makers, patient organizations and specialists dealing with asthma and other comorbid
diseases.
I would like to thank all of the authors for their contributions, the EAACI Executive Committee Members, and
particularly Prof. Dr Ioana Agache, with whom working on this highly exciting project was a great pleasure, and
Costel Agache and Macarena Guillamon for their focus, devotion and proficiency
