A polymeric material's resistance to different environmental or processing related influences determines its suitability in any number of applications. Reliable information and performance predictions influence material selection. They take a variety of influences into consideration, among them resin manufacture, compounding, stabilization, processing, part design and end use. This book is based on the review of more than 1,200 literature sources and represents a comprehensive overview of the current know-how regarding the stability and resistance of thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers as well as the most commonly used reinforcements and additives. Extensive tables document material resistance to given media, facilitating appropriate material selection or stabilization for a given application.
By “polymers” we generally mean materials consisting of comparatively simple
macromolecular organic compounds. They are manufactured either synthetically
or by transforming natural products.
The technically relevant properties of polymers, such as shapability, hardness,
elasticity, tensile strength, temperature, and chemical resistance can be varied
over a wide range by the selection of raw materials, manufacturing methods, and
choice of additives. Polymers are processed further to become molded parts, semifinished
products, fibers, or films.
The reason for the wide variety of polymers is the wide range of monomer building
blocks available, as well as the various possibilities for arranging them to form
macromolecular chains. Such chains may be linear or branched (thermoplastics) or
crosslinked (elastomers or thermosets).
