The territory of the Caucasus
The Caucasus Mountains is a mountain system in Eurasia lying between the Black and the Caspian Sea in the
Caucasus region. It occupies parts of the Russian Federation, Abkhazia, Georgia, South Ossetia, Armenia and
Azerbaij an, drifting mainly from northwest to southeast. The Caucasus Mountains are made up of two separate ranges,
the Greater Caucasus (Caucasus Major) in the north and the Lesser Caucasus (Caucasus Minor) in the south. The
Greater and Lesser Caucasus ranges are connected by the Suramskiy Range (= Likhitskiy Range), which separates the
Kolkhida Lowland from the Kura Depression (Kura Lowland). (Figs 1 – 5 . )
Greater Caucasus (Caucasus Major) – the maj or mountain range o f the Caucasus Mountains system. I t stretches
from west-nordwest to east-southeast, between the Taman Peninsula of the B lack Sea to the Apsheron Peninsula of the
Caspian Sea. This range is separated into three parts:
Western Caucasus – from the town Anapa to Mt Elbrus. The area covers the montane part of Krasnodar Prov. and
Adygea, as well as Karachay-Cherkessia of the Russian Federation and Abkhazia.
Central Caucasus – from Mt Elbrus to Mt Kazbek. The area covers Kabardino-Balkaria and North Ossetia of the
Russian Federation, South Ossetia and the nortwest part of Georgia.
Eastern Caucasus – from Mt Kazbek to the Caspian Sea. The area includes the montane part of Ingushetia, Chechnya
and Dagestan of the Russian Federation, the northeast and east part of Georgia and northern Azerbaij an.
Lesser Caucasus (Caucasus Minor) – the second of the two main mountain ranges forming the Caucasus. It runs
parallel to the Greater Caucasus, at the distance averaging about 1 00 km south and limits the Armenian Highland from
the north and northwest. It begins from the western spurs of the Meskhetskiy Range and covers the Trialetskiy and
Sevanskiy ranges up to the Mrovdag in the east. It lies within Georgia (including Aj ara) southwestern Azerbaijan and
northern Armenia (the northern part of the Armenian Highland, including the Aragats massive).
