In the recent years there has been significant advance in our knowledge of risk factors,
gene-environment interactions, incidence, prevalence, outcomes, and prevention strategies of
many neurological disorders. These advances have been accompanied by developments in
study design methodologies and statistical analysis procedures. This book is primarily aimed
at neurologists, internists, health policy decision makers and other health professionals with
limited experience of epidemiological and statistical methods. Most medical researchers will
have received some form of statistical training, but it may have been far too brief, many years
ago, and long forgotten by now. The aims of the first chapter of this book are threefold (a) to
reacquaint the reader with some of the fundamental statistical concepts that are needed to
conduct research (b) to introduce aspects of epidemiological study designs and to incorporate
the role played by statistics in analysing and interpreting the results of such study designs (c)
outline the rationale and results of some case-studies in recent neuroepidemiological research
literature which have employed these study designs and analytical methods.
We were motivated to write this book by the belief that the introductory texts currently
available in neuroepidemiology were rather long, aimed at specialist rather than at a wider
epidemiological audience, and were therefore more useful as an occasional reference. We
have aimed to produce a text that the general health professional with the interest in
neuroepidemiology can refer to on a daily basis. Written by leading world experts in
neuroepidemiology and clinical neurology this handbook this book aims to bridge the gap
between current neuroepidemiological knowledge and its evidence-based application in
everyday practice
We have assumed that most researchers have access to a computer but not necessarily a
statistical software package. A CD has been provided that contains a document which
outlines how to download the free statistical software package R and how to perform some
simple analyses that have been described in Chapter 1. In addition, a detailed description of a
real dataset and a selection of documented programs written in the R (version 2.4.0) syntax
are provided in order to encourage the reader to try some of these standard analyses
themselves. The aim is to give the reader a taste of the types of analyses that can be
conducted and how to present the results in a clear and concise manner.
