Spinal diseases constitute a big signifi cant and constantly increasing of the daily practice of neuroradiologists, neurologists and neurosurgeons. Once considered as a stepchild of the neuro- specialities, spinal diseases have also moved into the focus of many practitioners and general radiologists spending much of their clinical and research efforts in this area.
This book is primarily written for last-year residents and fellows in neuroradiology, radiology, neurosurgery and neurology, but it should also be useful for orthopaedic surgeons and advanced spine practitioners. The editors give an overview of imaging fi ndings in spine and spinal cord diseases with special regard to the anatomical structures of the spinal canal and the spinal cord. This approach should give support to differentiate the pathologies affecting the structures of the spinal canal. It was an utmost concern to illustrate the different pathologies with educative radiological images. However, this book should not replace current neuroradiological picture books. The description of pathophysiological aspects and of clinical findings together with characteristic lesion patterns might enable the reader to interpret diagnostic radiological images in daily clinical practice and to decide sometimes very urgent therapeutic consequences. Instructive tables as well as boxes containing key imaging features were added for differential diagnostic considerations.
The book chapters have been organized in an intuitive and logical sequence. After a thorough overview on the spine and spinal cord anatomy in Sect. II (Chaps. 2 and 3 ), Sect. III (Chaps. 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ) especially MR imaging techniques for the spine, spinal canal and spinal cord including MR angiography, diffusion tensor imaging, CSF dynamics and MR myelography. However, the Chap. 8 of this section addresses traditional myelography and post-myelographic CT investigations, since these techniques have especially to be proven especially valuable in patients who undergo instrumentation techniques in which high-quality MR images are diffi cult to obtain and also in patients with contraindications for MRI. Section IV (Chap. 9 ) provides an overview on malformations of the spine and spinal cord, which occur most often in children. In Sect. V (Chaps. 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ) tumorous, degenerative and infl ammatory diseases of extramedullary origin are described in detail, and characteristics as well as therapeutic managements of the most important spinal fractures and traumatic spinal cord injuries are reviewed. Chapter 13 of this section deals with disorders of meningeal origin and illustrates relevant neoplastic and infl ammatory leptomeningeal diseases. The Sect. VI (Chaps. 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ) deals with diseases of the spinal cord with special regard to intramedullary imaging fi nding on MRI. Pathophysiology, characteristic lesion patterns and also some hints regarding therapeutic options of neoplastic, infl ammatory, metabolic-toxic and vascular diseases of the spinal cord are displayed. Chapter 17 addresses especially grey matter diseases.
