The book has five chapters and each chapter has been designed on the lines to give phenomena (physical basis), some historical perspective, materials synthesis and processing, characterization and properties, applications, and future directions to the extent possible. While keeping in mind the above points, a vivid account of the techniques used in the preparation and characterization of these new biomaterials has been brought out. Discussion of the results obtained on the structural, magnetic, antibacterial, bioactivity/compatibility, mechanical, and other related properties and the implication of these results on biomedical applications are given. Each chapter has an exhaustive bibliography for readers to look into more details. The first chapter reviews the progress made in magnetic bioglass and glass-ceramics and their biomedical applications. The second chapter deals with self-assembly approach for biomaterials development. Mesoporous structure and its implications have been brought out in the third chapter. Techniques developed for characterizing the hierarchical structure of sol–gel glasses and hybrids, to quantify the open macroporous networks of scaffolds, have been reviewed. The fourth chapter looks into different categories of natural and synthetic fibers for widespread application as biomaterials. Their specific processing methods and testing and evaluation schemes are thoroughly described along with their advantages and disadvantages. The fifth chapter describes not only an accelerated development and significant advances in biomaterials used in total hip replacement (THR) but also several therapeutic risks that should not be ignored. Technical problems faced by the surgeon during implant fixation in THR and the selection of materials based on the patient’s requirement are also discussed. Recent advances in implant materials including the reinforcement and biocompatibility issues have also been addressed.
