The Editors have asked me to write the Foreword for this new edition of the
BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Neurology. I am happy to do so and
feel it is a great honour. The fact that this Manual is now in its fourth edition
indicates how knowledge has changed rapidly in this area since the first
edition was produced in 1989.
Many veterinary practitioners consider neurology to be one of the more difficult
specialties, yet it is an area that simply requires a logical and systematic
approach.
Part 1, Diagnostic procedures, describes the increasing availability of
additional diagnostic tests such as MRI, which has greatly advanced this
discipline; but this does not devalue the importance of ‘the neurological
examination’, which is well covered and revised and updated in Chapter 2.
The requirement to consider lesion location within the nervous system is very
important in diagnosis, as highlighted in Chapter 2. It is worth purchasing this
Manual for chapters and 2 alone
Part 2, Neurological presentations, provides an excellent resource and will
be well thumbed – as the previous edition has been in my practice. These
chapters cover the diverse signs and symptoms of neurological conditions
exceptionally well.
Part 3, Therapeutics, provides a wide range of up-to-date material for all
levels of veterinary surgeons.
