Dr. Rawlings is an academic scientist working as
Senior Computer Biologist at the Wellcome Trust Sanger
Institute since 2002, Hinxton and he has worked with Dr.
Alan Barrett since 1982 at both the Strangeways Research
Laboratory (1982
1995), where he first worked with
Guy Salvesen, and the Babraham Institute (1995
2002).
He has been an editor of the multi-author Handbook of
Proteolytic Enzymes since the first edition in 1998. His
major activity at present is leading the small team that
produce the MEROPS database (http://merops.sanger.ac.
uk). This is the only database that attempts comprehensive
coverage of all proteolytic enzymes on the Internet,
and it is regarded as the authoritative source on this topic
by major biological databases. Dr. Rawling’s interest in
biological sequence comparison and protein evolution
developed from his technical role in the manual sequencing
of bacterial ribosomal proteins at the Max Planck
Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin during the early
1980s. It is because of his interest in ornithology that the
MEROPS database is named after a bird.

Guy Salvesen

Dr. Salvesen earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from
Cambridge University in 1980, inder the supervision of
Dr. Alan Barrett. He conducted postdoctoral research at
the University of Georgia, Strangeways Laboratory and
MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. In
1987 he was appointed Assistant Medical Research
Professor at Duke University before moving his laboratory
to Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, San
Diego, in 1996. He is Director of the Program in
Apoptosis and Cell Death Research, Dean of the
Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences of Sanford-
Burnham Medical Research Institute, and Director of
Scientific Training at Sanford-Burnham, and holds an
Adjunct Professorship in Molecular Pathology at the
University of California, San Diego. He is on the editorial
board of several journals, Vice Chair for the Americas of
the Biochemical Journal, and Co-founder of the
International Proteolysis Society
