In breast reconstruction, flap based procedures and implant based procedures are the two major modalities that have emerged as surgical options for patients. These are both continuing to evolve as new, innovative techniques help to improve outcomes and patient satisfaction. This book is divided into four sections. The first section includes overviews of mastectomy options and considerations in breast reconstruction procedure selection. The next section comprises non microsurgical reconstruction options which include implant based reconstruction refinements, the emerging role of fat grafting, and a novel technique of robotic latissimus flap harvesting. The third section is devoted to microsurgical reconstruction including flap refinements, tips and tricks, as well as advice on handling difficult situations. The final section includes the growing field of lymphedema surgery which is an important addition to breast reconstruction.

Dr. Aldona Spiegel became Director of the Center for Breast Restoration with the Institute for Reconstructive Surgery at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas in 2005. She is also an Associate Professor in the Division of Plastic Surgery of Weill Medical College at Cornell University (2012). She earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Ottawa (1990, 1994) and completed her general surgery training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland (1997). She completed a microsurgery fellowship (1998) and plastic surgery (2001) training at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas where she was a faculty member (2001–2005). Dr. Spiegel is a member of several committees (In-service Committee and Breast Committee of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Nominating Committee of the World Society for Reconstructive Surgery) and Editorial Review Boards (Associate Editor of The Breast Journal, member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery, and Manuscript Reviewer for Annals of Plastic Surgery). Dr. Spiegel has contributed numerous journal articles and book chapters to scholarly publications. Her primary fields of interest include microsurgery, breast reconstruction, and reinnervation.
